Webcasting Vs. Webinar

Webcast and Webinar are terms that are often used interchangeably. Even those who have an idea of what these terms mean, can find that while the purpose and implementation are the same, there are still key differences. These web events need to be understood thoroughly to know about them. Here is a brief note on these, and the differences.

Webcast:  Is a large audience broadcast over the internet. This flow of information happens one way (broadcast to audience) so the host can control the content. There is often no role for the audience with regards to the information rather than watching and listening. This is great when you want to share content with a large number of people. If you want your audience to react to your message you need to input a clear call to action, for them to do something. Adding social media and other engagement tools so that your audience can still interact with your content is key. The prerequisites for a webcast is an audience, audio and or video content, and a landing page to broadcast the content . The best way for your audience to be able to engage in a webcast is a hybrid event that enables the audience to engage with what’s happening in the webcast.

Webinar: This can be a meeting or seminar over the internet. For instance, there are web classes conducted for students in schools, or employees at offices, for education and training based programs. Webinars are more interactive as people can collaborate and share ideas during the webinar. The audience should be small enough so that everyone can have a chance to contribute. The use of slides, graphs, polling, Q&A, chat boxes and other collaborative means can be useful for further discussion.

Differences: The key difference between the webinar and webcast is that a webinar is a means to collaborate and gain immediate feedback, questions, and responses. In comparison to the webcast which is just to get people to listen or watch content.
